Welcome to this special issue, a collection of selected papers presented at the 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection, held in Cagliari (Italy), September 12-16, 2010.Since 1951, the ICLP offers a platform for the exchange of scientific and technical information related to lightning protection. The 30 technical sessions of the 2010 edition have provided an in-depth coverage of lightning physics, electromagnetic effects on various systems and structures and lightning protection challenges.To acknowledge these results and to make accessible some of them to the whole electrical power system research community, the authors of several high-quality technical contributions dealing with topics relevant to the lightning protection of power systems were invited to submit follow-up papers to EPSR. The selection was made from a short list of contributions that were most appreciated during the ICLP 2010 review process, as well as those manuscripts that received the Best Student Paper Award, following the indications of the Session Chairmen. Among the 21 contributions that were invited, 13 were submitted and accepted at the end of the review process to form this special issue.
