November 18, 2008, Google Tech Talks presented a lecture, "The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor -What Fusion Wanted to Be," by Dr. Joe Bonometti on the advantages of using thorium for nuclear power. Thorium was known since the dawn of the nuclear era to have potential for electrical power generation. Unfortunately, available funds were channeled into perfecting ~(235)U and ~(238)U technologies because of their suitability for use in warheads. After uranium reactors became the "entrenched technology," it was difficult to persuade opinion leaders to adopt a different approach to nuclear power production.
