The Institute for Supply Management's closely watched Purchasing Managers Index crossed into growth territory for the first time since July 2019 with a 50.9% reading. Any monthly reading over 50% indicates bullish buying conditions in the industrial purchasing environment. Timothy Fiore, chair of the Tem-pe, AZ-base Institute for Supply Management(ISM) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said in the press release, "The January PMI registered 50.9%, an increase of 3.1 percentage points from the seasonally adjusted December reading of 47.8%. The New Orders Index registered 52% an increase of 4.4 percentage points from the seasonally adjusted December reading of 47.6%.
