A total of 51 prominent Chinese scientists were elected CAS members in 2005. The announce merit was made at a press conference held on Dec. 16 in Beijing. CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the conference to give a briefing on the election and the new members. CAS membership is the highest academic title and an honor of life tenure conferred by the State in S&T circles. The election of CAS members is held biennially, and each time the total number of new members to be elected will not exceed 60, according to the Bylaws for CAS Members. At present, CAS has a total of 707 members, with an average age of 72.
