The Bureau of Labor Statistics keeps track of the number of businesses by category within each U.S. county. All establishments are categorized by their NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) code, which is the successor to the old SIC (Standard Industrial Classification)? based on how each company defines itself on its tax form (Form 941 for reporting FICA payments). But there are issues: 1. Any entity, individual, or company that sells reproduced material should be considered in the demographics of the printing industry. Thus, newspaper, lettershop, and prepress firms that produce commercial services should be counted. 2. There are more than 6000 copy shops and most of them do not own printing presses. Business services that produce such reproduction services should be counted, and should be categorized with quick printing. 3. The first users of digital color printing were prepress services. Today, digital printing is a substitute for offset lithography just as offset litho was a substitute for letterpress. Any entity that sells digital printing and copying should be counted.
