In Beijing, China on January 12, 1999, "Mr. Otis," a new cartoon hero dressed in a yellow jacket and a white hardhat, stepped off a "lift" this afternoon at the Beijing International Convention Centre and marked the start of the "National Elevator Safety Education Program" in China. The program is sponsored by Otis Elevator International, Inc. The program is designed to raise awareness about elevator safety among Chinese people, children in particular. Mr. Otis, a specially created cartoon figure, combines entertainment with education, teaching children how to ride safely on elevators and escalators with songs and demos.
