Since the inception of the National Association of Vertical Transportation Professionals (NAVTP) in November 1991, promoting safety within the industry and providing members with opportunities for continuing education have been primary goals of the organization and its members. As the practice of elevator consulting had grown from only 12 consultancies in 1973 to more than 150 in 1991, founding members Hubert Hayes, Michael Shiflet, Leonard LeVee and George Murray felt the need to formally organize an association to create a forum for professionals in the vertical transportation industry to exchange ideas, innovations and regulations and improve the general function of the industry in all of its phases. It was the first national professional association of its kind.
