The relationship between high quality management and leadership abilities, and sustainable economic growth and productivity is undoubtedly a close one. Good management and leadership are fundamental to enhancing a nation's economic performance and although there appears to be no shortage of supply in management qualifications and courses, a closer look shows that much of what is on offer is of variable quality and fails to meet the needs of both the course delegates and their customers. The evidence? A 2002 report from the Council for Excellence in Management & Leadership found that over a third of organisations felt that their managers were not good enough at what they do and that between 2002 and 2006, there would be a need for 400,000 new managers - that's 100,000 a year. Two years on, those managers are still required in ever-increasing numbers.
