When a wave of new countries joined the EU in May this year, speculation became rife as to the effect this would have on the engineering industry -particularly in the UK. Because the majority of these new countries were from the Eastern Bloc, where costs are lower, one of the UK's principle fears was that it would have to lower costs to remain competitive. But, with their accession, many inherent benefits were overlooked; the engineers from these new EU member countries have brought their own brand of skills and innovation to the UK.
