"Hey Mister, your slip is showing!" was the strapline for an advert many years ago - I think for Pozidriv screws. None of us likes to have flaws in our work pointed out; I remember taking some parts into my local machine shop for grinding and being mortified when my contact pointed out some witness marks. Lathe chucks, clamps and press tools and dies can all leave these marks on a workpiece. When turning, three-jaw and four-jaw chucks are the principal culprits, as the force acting on the workpiece via the small contact areas of the jaws is huge, especially when the chuck is tightened really well for cutting a large thread with a die. Mostly, we don't have to take precautions to avoid marks, but when we are holding a turned or ground surface, we do.
