Readers who follow these features will know that much of my activity since arriving at the 121/4-inch gauge Fairbourne Railway on the Welsh coast last Autumn has been concerned with the 10-year overhaul of half-sized Darjeeling B Class 0-4-0 'Sherpa'. We are at the stage of putting the loco back together with lots of additional refinements, and fitting a new axlebox lubrication system gave me an excuse to try out flaring copper tubing using a lathe. You can buy kits to put flares on tubing that are designed for brake lines, however I didn't see the point for just four flares so I came up with this method instead.
