摘要

Another fine Swiss morning greeted our visit to the Brienz Rothorn Railway, the last remaining fully steam operated rack railway in Switzerland. Built in 1891 on 800mm or 2'-7 1/2" gauge track and utilising the Abt rack system, the railway climbs from the village of Brienz at 566m to the summit station Rothorn Kulm at 2244 meters. The very peak is at 2349 meters, a short walk from the hotel. With a line length of 7.6km there is a ruling gradient of about Ⅰ in 4. The journey to the top is an amazing experience, and, once at the top, the railway offers a superb restaurant and hotel providing tremendous views across the massive of the Bernese Alps.
