The city of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., experienced a critical emergency when it was discovered that several large-diameter sewer force mains were failing. The issue was greatly impacting the surrounding communities and waterways and costing tens of thousands of dollars to clean up. A report issued by the city last February states, "Twenty-first century stormwater master planning and design for low-lying coastal areas require new thinking. Solutions must be flexible, pragmatic, include a balance of conventional and innovative approaches, and utilize the natural environment as an asset." The ongoing challenge led the city to issue an emergency response proposal request to replace and install new force mains.
