Top-level temping, or interim executive management as it is more properly termed, is proving to be a cost-effective way for companies to meet a senior management need on a short-term basis. Interim executives prefer challenging short-term assignments to a permanent position. Interim management, executive leasing or head-renting has become a top-level resourcing option for boards in need of short-term troubleshooters. The concept has many advocates and is beginning to capture the imagination of Britain's chief executives. Unlike consultants, interim executives take over responsibility as chief executives or as acting heads of production, finance, marketing or IT. They are given full authority for periods ranging from 6 to 9 months to manage corporate change, but mostly to handle typical problem situations such as loss-making subsidiaries, acquisitions to be integrated, unprofitable noncore offshoots to be prepared for sale; or they are brought in to fill a short-term gap until a new appointment is made. The interim executive's strength is in being suitably overqualified. This expertise can help avoid mistakes in periods of corporate change and add real value to an operation's cost effectiveness. They can act as company doctors, turnaround managers, new product launchers, site disposers, or install new systems.
