Given that the technology of comput-erised finite element analysis (FEA) was first used commercially in the mid 1960s it might reasonably be expected to be fairly mature 30 years later. But in reality many new developments have emerged because of the explosive growth in computing power, improved algorithms, adaptivity, increased use of solid modelling and an overriding desire for optimised designs. Established market leaders, with their extensive range of functionality, are beginning to target niche applications which require sophisticated solution techniques. These applications, such as metal forming, often involve highly non-linear, problems with contact and friction.
