EPA is moving ahead with plans to gather extensive data on potential risks to the public from lead paint during renovation and maintenance of public and commercial buildings (P&CBs) - despite industry arguments that such action is unnecessary - and is asking the White House to approve an Information Collection Request (ICR) that could support a decision to regulate such activities. The effort is part of EPA's ongoing efforts to determine whether it should follow its 2008 rule mandating precautions to be undertaken when renovating, repairing or painting (RRP) housing and child-occupied buildings constructed before 1978, and therefore likely to contain lead paint, with a similar rule pertaining to P&CBs. Environmental, public health and safe housing advocates have long urged the agency to do so, arguing that lead is a hazard with an unknown safety threshold.
