Following pressure from Congress and the Obama administration, an EPA contractor is undertaking a congression-ally mandated review of the agency's laboratories' capacity and real estate, suggesting that the 37 separate labs could be facing cuts and consolidation as part of upcoming deficit reduction efforts. Agency sources say that contractors from The Smith Group are in the process of evaluating the agency's labs. One agency source describes "a big effort to evaluate 'the EPA laboratory enterprise,' and part of that is the contract with Smith to evaluate [the labs'] capacity."
