摘要

EPA's Office of Inspector General (OIG) and environmentalists are calling on the agency to better assess risks posed by chemical dispersants used to mitigate oil spills and better track what dispersants are being used and if they are the safest and most effective option following questions raised during last year's BP oil spill. OIG is further urging the agency to seek more funding for emergency response operations and clarify roles and responsibilities of EPA and the Coast Guard during spills of national significance. As a result, the Office of Research & Development (ORD) is in the process of "developing a longer-term research strategy to address gaps specifically related to the health and environmental effects of dispersants, as well as addressing other oil spill-related research needs," according to ORD chief Paul Anastas's June 30 response to the draft report. The strategy, which has already undergone Science Advisory Board (SAB) review, is expected to be published in the fall, according to the letter.
