EPA Region VI is strongly disputing findings by the agency's Office of Inspector General (OIG) that the region undermined remedial Superfund cleanup actions by prematurely removing a site from EPA's National Priorities List (NPL)-a move that could undermine pending OIG studies examining cleanups at other sites removed from the NPL. OIG in a Nov.19 report found that the region erred by determining that cleanup efforts at the former Delatte Metals Superfund site in Ponchatoula,LA,protect humans and the environment "in the short-term" and failed to take corrective action when it conducted a five-year review of the site in 2007.The report said Region VI should revise its plan to say the adequacy of the cleanup cannot be determined without further analysis.
