The Environmental Protection Agency will spend about $6.5 million on research that aims to prevent and control algal blooms in waters across the U.S. The money will fund research projects at seven institutions across the country focusing on how to control the nutrients that contribute to the blooms, the EPA said Thursday. 1.Harmful algal blooms are caused by excess nitrogen and phosphorus in waterways, among other factors. 2.The projects are based at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater; San Jose State University in California; the University of Idaho; the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; the University of South Florida; Washington Univ. in St. Louis, Mo.; and the Water Research Foundation in Alexandria, Va.
