The threat of electromagnetic pulse events to the electric grid caused by nuclear attacks is an urgent matter that Congress needs to address, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and defense experts told a Senate committee. Nuclear attacks on the electric grid would take years to recover from, Gingrich said at a May 4 Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on EMP threats to the grid.
