California regional water quality officials have a new tool to help oversee the use of biodegradation and other naturally occurring processes at groundwater cleanup sites. A guidance document the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board approved March 14 outlines how to determine when natural processes should be used as an alternative to other technologies for remediating groundwater contamination. The document also includes recommendations for implementing and monitoring a natural remediation option to ensure site-specific goals are achieved in a reasonable time frame. Allowing natural processes can lower cleanup costs and energy use, but they can often take longer. The Environmental Protection Agency has guidelines and technical documents on the use of natural attenuation like biodegradation, sorption, evaportation, chemical reaction and dilution.
