The highest rate of emissions of volatile organic compounds and methane occurs during the flow-back phase of natural gas extraction operations in a Colorado county, a new study found. Emissions during flowback-the production of water and fracking fluids coming out of the ground after operators hydraulically fracture a well-were greater than during the drilling or hydraulic fracturing phases, according to the study released June 14 by the Colorado State University's Department of Atmospheric Science.
