A trade group representing investor-owned utilities such as American Electric Power Inc., Exelon Corp. and Southern Co. is asking its members to electrify their vehicle fleets and dedicate 5 percent of their annual purchase plans to plug-in vehicles. In a white paper released July 23, the Edison Electric Institute said the benefits of increasing electric vehicle usage include helping reverse "stagnant growth" in the sector. EEI said retail sales of electricity in the U.S. have fallen 2 percent between 2007 and 2013.
