The question of whether to ban hydraulic fracturing in the city of Denton, Texas, will be decided at the ballot box in November, after the City Council rejected a petition calling for the ban. City Council members voted down the petition 5-2 following six hours of public testimony, sending the proposal to the ballot in November. Denton is a North Texas city of about 110,000 residents on the northern edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. If the measure is approved by voters in the fall, it would mark the first fracking ban of its kind in Texas, a ban the Railroad Commission of Texas-the state's oil and gas regulator-has repeatedly warned would deal a blow to the city and statewide economy.
