The House Appropriations Committee approved a fiscal year 2014 energy and water development bill June 26 that would cut research and development programs for renewable energy and advanced energy technologies by about half compared with fiscal 2013. The bill was approved 28-21, largely along party lines, after the Republican majority voted down attempts by Democrats to restore funding for those programs. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.), chairman of the Energy and Water Development Subcommittee, which wrote the bill, said the research and development programs involved much good work but that the sponsors of the amendments failed to offer offsetting cuts in other programs to balance the restoration of funds.
