Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) pledged June 25 to "make a major effort" to improve the efficiency of National Environmental Policy Act reviews for federal forest management projects. "I do not believe increasing the [timber] harvest and protecting the environment are mutually exclusive," Wyden said during a hearing of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, which he chairs. About 70 percent of federal forest management project costs are devoted to environmental analysis and documentation, he said. During the hearing, Wyden sought solutions to streamline NEPA without "shortchanging the important environmental protections in the law." Offering testimony were federal and local natural resource officials, a forestry expert, and members of two coalitions that represent the timber industry, conservation groups, and tribal interests.
