The selenium released into waterways near a J.R. Simplot Co. phosphate mine in Idaho is linked to two-headed trout and other fatal deformities in fish, one of many problems that could persist if the company wins its bid to relax water quality standards at the mine site, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Idaho officials said they will be reviewing a FWS technical review of an August 2010 Simplot report on selenium discharges as they weigh the company's proposal to relax standards for waterways near the company's Smoky Canyon mine in southeast Idaho. The FWS review looks at a 1,200-page study that Simplot used in its effort to change Idaho water standards.
