Projects that capture and store carbon dioxide emitted by coal-fired power plants and various industrial processes are slowly making a dent in greenhouse gas emissions, according to a study released Feb. 14 by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions.The 15 large projects now either in operation or under construction around the world have the capacity to store more than 35 million tons of carbon dioxide a year, the rough equivalent of the carbon dioxide emitted by more than 6 million automobiles annually, according to the study.The center, formerly the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, touted the report as the first comprehensive framework for calculating the degree to which such projects-including 59 in the planning stage-can actually reduce global carbon dioxide emissions.
