Cynthia Dougherty, director of the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water for the past 17 years, has announced plans to retire at the end of March, an agency official confirmed March 13. Nancy Stoner, EPA acting assistant administrator for water, told Bloomberg BNA in an email that Dougherty, who has served as director of the water office since 1995, "has done a tremendous job protecting drinking water (and before that, surface waters) in the United States."
