A senior member of the House Appropriations Committee March 31 accused the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of violating federal law and commission procedures by refusing to call for a vote on withdrawing the license application for the Yucca Mountain radioactive waste repository. Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), who chairs the House Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee and is a senior member of the Energy and Water Development Subcommittee, told NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko during budget hearing that Jaczko's actions will be closely scrutinized by Congress in the days ahead.
