Dominion Virginia Power says it expects power demand from its customers to increase 30 percent over the next 15 years but is projecting that the company can close several coal-fired power plants and still meet demand in 2026. The plan announced Sept. 1 envisions adding power plants that burn natural gas and biomass, as well a new nuclear power unit, to generate additional electricity. By also retrofitting existing units and erecting new transmission lines and upgrading others to improve efficiency, demand likely could be met in 2026 even as several coal-fired power plants are closed, Dominion said.
