House and Senate Republicans are pressing forward with legislation to prevent the Interior Department from blocking most mining in 1 million acres within about 40 miles of the Grand Canyon, but no Democrat in either house has offered support for the bills. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is expected to decide soon-by Jan. 20 at the latest-whether to go through with his proposal to block all new mining claims, especially for uranium, for 20 years on three large segments of federal desert and forest land in northern Arizona. Salazar will be free to issue his decision Nov. 25, or 30 days after release of his department's final environmental impact statement on the plan (42 ER 2412, 10/28/11).
