摘要

Sockeye salmon are swimming up the Columbia River in record numbers this summer, a surge that biologists are attributing to improved ocean conditions and increased spillway water at dams, making it easier for fish to navigate. As of Aug. 3, more than 386,430 sockeye had entered the Columbia River through the Bonneville Dam east of Portland, Ore., according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. That is the highest number since 1947, when 335,300 sockeye were counted at Bonneville and in a harvest below it.rnSockeye numbers at Bonneville were higher on a single day this summer-30,690 on June 24-than in several entire years. In both 1998 and 1999, fewer than 18,000 sockeye, the smallest salmon species, were counted at Bonneville.
