Vice President Joe Biden April 22 announced $300 million in funding for low-ernissions buses and infra-rnstructure to maintain them. The money, provided in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Pub L. No. 111-5), will support more than 30 alternative fuels or advanced vehicles projects. Technologies eligible to be funded by the so-called Clean Cities Program include a number of different light- and heavy-duty vehicles, including hybrid, plug-in electric hybrid, hydraulic hybrid, electric, fuel cell, and compressed natural gas vehicles. In addition, projects can support refueling infrastructure for alternative fuels, including biofuels and natural gas. Those eligible to apply for Clean Cities grants are state governments, local governments, or metropolitan transit authorities that partner with a designated Clean Cities coalition. Biden made the announcement at a transit maintenance facility in Land-over, Md., and was joined by Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D).
