Parties to the Antarctic Treaty have agreed to a series of resolutions designed to regulate tourism and shipping and to protect Antarctica's ecosystems, officials said at an April 17 news conference.rnSpeaking at the close of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting in Baltimore, the officials said delegates agreed to a binding resolution to restrict the number of tourists landing in Antarctica and to a nonbinding resolution that urged treaty signatories to cooperate in protecting ecosystems outside the boundaries of treaty jurisdiction.rnThe Antarctic Treaty designates Antarctica as a place for peaceful, shared scientific research and exploration and went into force in 1961.rnThis year is the 50th anniversary of the 1959 signing of the treaty. The treaty applies to the area south of 60° south latitude, including all ice shelves and islands. Among other things, it prohibits military activity, except in support of scientific research, and bars nuclear explosions and the disposal of nuclear waste.
