The White House strategy to eventually develop a national high-speed rail network, announced April 16 by President Obama, involves two separate phases, the first of which aims to increase speeds on existing rail lines.rnObama, joined by Vice President Joseph Biden and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, laid out his vision for establishing a network of high-speed trains connecting large cities between 100 and 600 miles apart. But since such a network is decades away, Obama said that smaller repairs and upgrades to existing lines will begin this summer, allowing some current routes to increase speeds as well as ridership.rn"This is just a first step. We know that this is going to be a long-term project, but us getting started now, us moving the process forward, getting people to imagine what's possible, and putting resources behind it so that people can start seeing examples of this around the country, that's going to spur all kinds of activity," Obama said.
