摘要

The acting head of the Department of Energy's Environmental Management Program pledged at a Senate hearing April 22 to closely monitor and "wisely manage" $6 billion in economic stimulus funds.rnInes Triay, acting assistant secretary for environmental management, testified before the Senate Subcommittee on Strategic Forces at a hearing called expressly to examine the program's strategy for using stimulus funds.rnThe funds going to the program as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Pub. L, No. 111-5) are targeted at accelerating cleanup of nuclear and other hazardous waste at "legacy sites" where nuclear weapons and fuel were produced during World War II and the Cold War era.rnThe targeted areas include original Manhattan Project sites such as Hanford, Wash., and the Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee, as well as Cold War sites, including the Savannah River Lab in South Carolina and the Idaho National Lab.
