Hoping to curb harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and other toxins from diesel engines, the Chicago City Council approved an ordinance Oct. 7 placing firm limits on idling by diesel trucks and buses.rnThe council unanimously supported a series of amendments to the city air pollution code, including a provision that limits idling by diesel vehicles to three minutes within any 60-minute period.rnChicago Mayor Richard M. Daley (D) is expected to approve the ordinance at the next city council meeting scheduled for Nov. 18.rnThe Illinois Campaign to Clean Up Diesel Pollution said Chicago is the only major city in the Midwest to adopt a three-minute idling standard. New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. have all enacted three-minute idling laws. Illinois currently enforces a 10-minute idling standard.
