Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) said Nov. 10 that he remains "committed to passing meaningful, balanced climate change legislation" that cuts U.S. greenhouse gas emissions without harming the economy. But Baucus said he is working to ensure that climate legislation "can muster enough votes to become law" in the Senate, where supporters will need 60 votes to force a vote on the measure on the floor. His comments at a Finance Committee hearing came less than a week after he cast the lone Democratic vote against climate legislation (S. 1733) that cleared the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee by a vote of 11-1 (40 ER 2552, 11/6/09).
