Long, curved troughs of parabolic reflectors concentrate sunlight onto a hollow tube that carries a fluid such as water, oil, or molten salts. Oriented on a north-south axis, the troughs tilt during the day to follow the path of the sun. The heated fluid is used to heat steam in a standard turbine generator to produce electricity. Large parabolic trough systems, like the SEGS and Nevada Solar One facilities, consist of hundreds of these troughs occupying hundreds of acres of land.
