摘要

Geography as a discipline has a long and healthy history in South Australia. Due to the passion of individual educators and the activities of the Geography Teachers Association of South Australia (GTASA) since its foundation in 1936, South Australia has experienced ongoing curriculum development and indeed innovation in the geographical studies in schools (GTASA, 2005). This paper will outline the status quo of Geography in 2005 in South Australia and comment on the possible futures for the subject in the state. It should be stated at this point that much of the paper will concentrate on the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS) and the Senior Secondary Assessment Board of South Australia (SSABSA) curriculum directions with regards to geographical education. References will also be made to the Catholic Education and Independent Schools sectors of education in the State to give an overview of the status quo. What can be stated is that as is the case with Geography across Australia the study of Geography in schools in South Australia is undergoing change in response to the increasing competition from other subjects and the subsequent decline in curriculum time and student participation.
