We live in a "chemical" environment. Chemicals are everywhere around us, as part of air, water, and land. Chemicals are the building blocks of our bodies and of all living organisms. Additionally, there are endless possibilities for the formation of new chemicals in natural environments from the existing ones. Yet, some of the very same chemicals may cause pollution when spilled into environment due to human activities. Subsequently, it is common to confuse naturally occurring chemicals with pollutants. The simple fact that we manufacture a series of useful chemicals does not necessarily imply that nature cannot produce these same chemicals in its own ways. On the contrary, recent discoveries have increased our awareness of natural formation of different chemicals formerly attributed solely to anthropogenic activities (e.g., perchlorate in mineral formations and subsurface, or As in groundwater). Today, it is well established that natural environments have various levels of chemicals both in elemental forms and as different monomeric and polymeric compounds. These levels are usually specific to particular environments and constitute the so-called background levels. Anything exceeding such background levels could be attributed to pollution events.
