O'Connor and Sabrsula (2005) excluded the highest dioxin results and then combined the results for settled dust with those for bulk dust from household vacuums to obtain an average TEQ of 20.3 ppt for the remaining 14 samples, with a range of 1.3-53.7 ppt. The apparent exclusion criteria, including recent use of carpet powder and household sprays, were applied inconsistently and were inappropriate in the case of the latter. Combining the results for settled and bulk dust is also inappropriate because of their differing modes of deposition. If the full data set is used, the average TEQ for settled dust is 113 ppt for 16 samples (range: 0.24-518 ppt; standard deviation: 156 ppt; 95th percentile: 404 ppt) and for unsieved bulk dust from a domestic vacuum, it is 9.3 ppt for 12 samples (range: 1.3-24.1 ppt; standard deviation: 8.0 ppt; 95th percentile: 23.4 ppt).
