摘要

In this volume, Ellen Arnold calls for a revival of what she refers to as "cultural environmental history" (p. 9) as she examines two Benedictine monasteries and the interplay between those monks and the surrounding forest of the Ardennes. As a cultural historian, she specifically examines the stories about nature that the Benedictines told and the images and understandings of the nonhuman world that they displayed as they wrote a variety of texts between the years 648 and 1159 ce.
