The supply of electricity to more than 30,000 telecommunications industry base transceiver stations (BTSs) in Nigeria is currently provided via diesel-fueled electric generators. Annual levels of uncontrolled air pollutants from the existing BTSs in the country were estimated by combining information on the potential to emit pollutants by diesel-fueled generators with diesel utilization at the BTSs. The key information was the number of BTSs in the country from 2012 to 2014 and their diesel utilization. The estimated annual diesel utilization was 160,503,084.48, 196,514,656.80, and 209,761,966.80 U.S. gallons per annum in the years 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. The estimated annual emissions in the operating year 2014 were 4,457.45, 13,634.29, 63,347.12, and 4,163.77 tons per annum for particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur dioxide (S0_2), respectively. Considering the effects of these emissions on human health and environment, management measures and medium- to long-term solutions are suggested to mitigate their impacts.
