Air pollution has been characterized as a "disease of civilized society" (Bonini, Magrini, Rotiroti, Ronchetti, & Onorati, 1994). Our studyrnshows that Kolkata has experienced some of the highest levels of air pollution in India.rnAir pollutant levels have created multiple threats to the health of the city's residents. Among urban subjects who were chronicallyrnexposed to high levels of air pollution, we observed reductions in lung function, metaplasia of airway cells, immune alterations, platelet and leukocyte activation, and genotoxic changes. These impacts increase the risk of pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
