The zebra mussels that have invaded the Great Lakes region have created many serious problems for those relying on lakes and rivers in the area for their water sources. Ironically, while these bodies of water have seen some benefits from the continuous siphoning of contaminants by the mussels, their choice of residence has had a profound effect on the performance of the systems used to draw the water to its intended location.
