"What's in a name?" Shakespeare's Juliet asks, as she, a Capulet, cannot associate with Romeo, a Montague. Names used to describe identity that resonate will influence behavior and outcomes, whereas, nonresonant names fade over time. In chemical safety, resonant names used to describe characteristics of chemicals can unite discussions and conceptual understandings between academics, industry, and regulators. Herein we present the chronology and evolution of resonant names given to substances that pose an inherent threat to the sources of our drinking water. Organic chemicals that permeate soils and subsurface deposits to reach groundwater, that remain dissolved in surface waters over large areas or time scales, and ultimately appear in the sources of our drinking water, have two intrinsic substance properties that allow them to contaminate the aqueous environment. The first intrinsic substance property is low degradation potential, causing persistency in the form of long half-lives in soil, sediment, and water. The second intrinsic substance property is a low sorption potential to sediments and soils, causing mobility in pore water. An early example of a resonant name given to such chemicals was "leacher".1
