Design for human installations very often starts from a clement situation - natural harbours host port cities, calm riverbanks attract urban settlements, valleys favour traffic arteries, trade routes invite the spreading of neighbourhoods, and vivid urban spots encourage the creation of public space. Urban planning and design take place because of what is found on site. But we also have to face the opposite - in spite of what is found on site, there might be a wish for development. In this case, professionals have to cope with hostile situations, even haunted places, characterised by major obstacles to human installation and urban life, but which for some reason are nevertheless subject to design interventions. In spite of a breathtakingly complicated topographic feature, a city centre should expand; in spite of a dreadfully blind building complex of old, a vivid neighbourhood should be created; in spite of a former polluting production site, an urban waterfront is to be developed. This issue of 'scape focuses on three of these 'in spite of projects and shows how a scary natural setting was tamed, a military monster hijacked, and an abandoned industrial complex domesticated.
